Pierre Bayle and the Republic of Letters
Abstract
We follow the composition of the Historical and Critical Dictionary of Pierre Bayle from his early notebooks to the Eclaircissements of the second edition. The elaboration of the Dictionary was made possible by a wide network of correspondents who provided the references and information required by Bayle. This network thus comes to represent the Republic of Letters, and the Dictionary the expression of the social construction of historical truth.
